Extent of Coal Measures within the Morwell Formation

Abstract

The dataset was derived by the Bioregional Assessment Programme from multiple source datasets. The source datasets are identified in the Lineage field in this metadata statement. The processes undertaken to produce this derived dataset are described in the History field in this metadata statement.

This is a shapefile of the generalised spatial extent of coal measures within the Morwell Formation. It has been derived from the Morwell Formation Coal Seam contour data in the Latrobe Valley Coal Resources dataset (GUID: d994a979-9224-4540-986d-d123de2fb459). You can find a link to the parent datasets in the Lineage Field in this metadata statement. The History Field in this metadata statement describes how this dataset was derived.

Purpose

The intention of this shapefile is to indicate the zone of interupted aquifer connectivity in the vicinity of the Morwell Formation. The coal seams act as aquitards and so vertical groundwater connectivity between aquifers overlying and underlying the Morwell Formation stratigraphic sequence is expected to be interupted by the presence of these aquitards.

Dataset History

Digitised, general extent of all the Morwell Formation Coal Seam layers from the Latrobe Valley Coal Resources dataset (GUID: d994a979-9224-4540-986d-d123de2fb459):

Further edits were made based on Morwell_coal_200k polygon drawn from all Morwell coal seam contours from the Latrobe Valley Coal Resources dataset. The northern and eastern boundaries were altered to reflect the estimated extent of the formation (original polygon is abruptly cut to the Latrobe Valley Coal Resources boundary). The estimated extent was based on Figure 10.27 of Holdgate, G. R. and S. J. Gallagher (2003). Tertiary: a period of transition to marine basin environments. Geology of Victoria. W. D. Birch, (Eds.) Geological Society of Australia Special Publication 23. Geological Society of Australia (Victoria Division). The extent was also checked against stratigraphic picks from petroleum well completion reports Rosedale 1 and Toongabbie 18 south (download from Geoscience Australia Petroleum Well Database http://dbforms.ga.gov.au/www/npm.well.search).
